Mesothelioma could approach the pleural lining close to the lungs. It could also approach the peritoneum, a tissue that rounds the GI tract. Mesothelioma could attack the stomach lining, additional inner organs, or even the pericardium (the tissue sac covering the heart). Hence, mesothelioma could be generally sorted into the coming cases:

Pleural — 75% of all mesothelioma cases

This type of mesothelioma develops in the lining of the lungs, known as the pleura. It is the most common form of malignant mesothelioma, with around 70 percent of cases being pleural in origin.

Peritoneal — 10%–20%

This form of mesothelioma develops in the lining of the abdominal cavity, known as the peritoneal membrane. Approximately 25 percent of mesotheliomas are of this type.

Pericardial — 5%

This form of mesothelioma develops in the lining of the heart, known as the pericardium. About 5 percent of all mesothelioma cases are pericardial.

Mesothelioma can also be sorted by the cancer case rather than the location of the cancer:

Epithelioid — most common, finest survival rate
Sarcomatoid — most severe, but more rare
Mixed/biphasic — a mixing of epithelioid and sarcomatoid cancer
