Hsing I Chuan most literally translated means Hsing(form), I(intent), Chuan(Boxing). It is the goal of Hsing I that the mind's intent leads the body’s form in boxing. While practicing Hsing Ithe martial artist will eventually develop to a point where the form is truly less important then the mind, when your mind can be focused, your body strength against cancer will be inhanced.

During the early stages of Hsing I training the student will practice 5 basic mechanics of motion. These mechanics are splitting, twisting, crushing, pounding and crossing. Each of these mechanics are learned through repetitive practice of techniques designed to ingrain the mechanic into the body’s structure. In this way the mind is able to transcend the limitations of conscious thought. For example, an experienced Hsing I practitioner would be able to throw someone across a room by just developing the intention to act and letting the body move accordingly. At this higher level the mind does not need to tell the body to "step forward", "put your arm at this angle" and "apply force", because the mechanics are so ingrained that the body just knows what to do. It is at this point that a martial artist is truly practicing Hsing I.

Of course, Hsing I is not only the perfection of physical mechanics, but also the incorporation of methods of Chi Kung or "inner work." This involves various types of stretching and breathing exercises to strengthen the body and release chronic tension. In these way, a person practicing Hsing I is able to increase their level of health as well as develop self defense skills. To accomplish this goal a person practices Hsing I with a relaxed movement as opposed to tense, strength based movement. The Chinese call this ideal state of being "sung" which means a relaxed, tenacious strength. The classical example is of a young sapling which when bent over, can spring back without damage. This is "sung."
